cloud chair, amazing aluminum furniture

Amazing isn’t it? Cloud chair from Richard Hutten is a polished and nickel plated aluminum casting, looks impeccable, it was produced by Ormond Editions in Holland, and was shown at the Milan design fair in 2009.

What do you think? Maybe it is not the most functional piece of furniture you can find, but sure is completely elegant and amazing, manufactured with a very high quality, Cloud Chair dimensions are 125/95/85 cm and weights 80kg.

It was produced in a limited edition, only 8 pieces were made, we don’t have the price but probably they are already sold out.

Amazing what you can achieve with aluminum castings, if you need more information about the kind of process they must have done visit this section of Torrey Foundry webpage.

How Aluminum Cans are Made?

Ever wonder how an aluminum can is made? We have! ever since we can remember the coca-cola aluminum cans, which is a lot.
Well, aluminum cans are made with a lot of highly industrialized procedures as we see on this video; everything passes on so quickly and with deep quality care.
Evidently the aluminum alloy and procedures that we see on an aluminum foundry are very different, no wonder aluminum is a great versatile material.

aluminum alloy

Aluminum alloys are formed commonly with copper, zinc, manganese, silicon and magnesium as the alloying elements. This components help to give aluminum better properties, such as cost effectiveness due to the melting point.

There are many kinds of aluminum allow compositions, you can find a general description of aluminum alloys inthe matweb, you can find also some data about most used aluminum alloys in casting here.

Aluminum alloys are ideal for manufacturing a recyclable, light and stiff product, it is also very diverse in the forms that it can take thanks to processes as sand casting and permanent mold casting (described in previous posts) among other processes.

sand casting

There are two kinds of molding in sand casting, one is commonly known as green sand casting and the other is known as air set sand castings. Both methods work by packing the mixture around a master patter for forming the mold cavity, the pattern is removed from the cavity and the final mold is formed by two parts generally called the cope and drag. The molten aluminum is poured then into de mold, when its time the sand mold is destroyed, obtaining like this the aluminum product in its first phase.
